My SHAPE Africa 2024 Journey: A Life-Changing Experience | Kum Emmanuel

When I received the news that I had been selected from a competitive pool of applicants to attend SHAPE Africa 2024 at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, I was both humbled and excited. Representing the Buea Hub among such a diverse group of changemakers from across Africa and the Diaspora felt like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. From the moment I arrived, it was clear this wasn’t just an event it was a platform for meaningful conversations, collaboration, and action toward building the Africa we all dream of under the theme “Upskilling for Africa’s Development. “

The event, organized by the Global Shapers Community in partnership with the World Economic Forum and the AU Youth Envoy, brought together participants from across the continent and the Diaspora. It wasn’t just a conference. It was a call to action—a moment to reflect on how we can shape Africa’s future in meaningful ways.

The schedule was packed with powerful keynotes, panels, and workshops that left me brimming with ideas. One session that stood out was the opening plenary, where speakers tackled pressing issues like renewable energy, youth leadership, and the future of small businesses in Africa. Listening to their perspectives made me realize just how much potential Africa has to lead globally in innovation and entrepreneurship.

I also had the privilege of attending a “Meet the Leader” session with Ms. Chido Mpemba, African Union Special Envoy on Youth, Ms. Ebba Kalondo, Spokesperson for the African Union Chairperson, and Mr. Chido Munyati, Head of Africa at the World Economic Forum. We had an eye-opening discussion about Africa’s peace and security challenges, as well as the obstacles hindering the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA). Their practical insights really hit home and made me think about what more I can do in my community.

SHAPE Africa wasn’t just about the sessions - it was about the people. Meeting young innovators tackling issues like education access, healthcare, and agriculture was nothing short of inspiring. Their work reminded me that no matter how different our backgrounds are, we all share a common goal: building a better Africa.

The social events were equally impactful. A cultural night celebrating Ethiopia’s rich heritage and coffee ceremonies that brought us together around tradition showed me the importance of celebrating our roots as we move forward.

Takeaways That Will Stick With Me

One of the biggest lessons I took away was the importance of tailoring solutions to Africa’s unique needs. It’s easy to get lost in global narratives, but real change comes from addressing challenges at the local level. Another lesson was the value of collaboration—working across sectors and disciplines is crucial for creating sustainable impact.

What’s Next?

As I reflect on my time at SHAPE Africa 2024, I feel more motivated than ever to contribute to my community. The experience wasn’t just inspiring it was a reminder that every action, no matter how small, can help build the Africa we want.

If you ever get the chance to attend SHAPE Africa or similar events, don’t hesitate. It’s more than a conference it’s a movement that will challenge you, inspire you, and leave you with a renewed sense of purpose.

Africa’s future is ours to shape, and this experience has shown me that together, we can make it brighter.
