Leading neurosurgeon, Dr. Ignatius Esene, exchanges with Open Dreams Scholars in Bamenda

The Open Dreams Center in Bamenda was honored to receive Dr. Ignatius Esene, a distinguished Cameroonian neurosurgeon and global health advocate whose career is marked by academic excellence, pioneering leadership, and a commitment to advancing neurosurgical care in underserved regions.

Dr. Esene's educational journey is remarkable. He holds two Doctorate Degrees, two Master's Degrees, a Postgraduate Fellowship, and Five Postgraduate Diplomas and certificates. After earning his Medical Doctorate in Cameroon, he pursued a Master's in Public Health in Brussels, graduating magna cum laude. He then completed a neurosurgery residency and a Ph.D. in Neurological Surgery at Ain Shams University in Cairo, supported by the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies and the Cameroonian government.



As the Chief of Neurosurgery at Garoua Regional Hospital, Dr. Esene established the first neurosurgical care unit in Northern Cameroon, significantly improving patient outcomes. He also serves as a Senior Lecturer in Neurosurgery at the University of Bamenda, contributing to the training of future medical professionals.


Dr. Esene's influence extends beyond Cameroon. He chairs the Young African Neurosurgeons Forum and co-chairs the Young Neurosurgeons Forum of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies. His editorial roles include Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Global Neurosurgery and co-founder of the Pan African Medical Journal – Clinical Medicine.


Dr. Ignatius Esene exemplifies the transformative power of dedication and leadership in medicine, making significant strides in neurosurgery and global health.

In recognition of his scholarly achievements, Dr. Esene was inducted into Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Honor Society, joining the ranks of esteemed scientists like Albert Einstein.


At the Open Dreams Center, he had inspirational exchanges with the dreamers, driving their motivation for action. Dr. Esene is one of the most resourceful, dedicated, and passionate mentors, creating incredible hands-on, project-based (experiential) learning opportunities for Open Dreams Scholars.
