From Cameroon to Ghana to Rwanda to the USA - My Academic Journey | Ngoh Rodney Amah

Updated: Nov 16

The things we tell ourselves become our reality, even the lies too!

Back in 2016, when the SAT was quite new to me and I had very little time to prepare for Ivy League scores, I thought of another pathway to a US University. I told myself that, if I could get into a reputable African University for reputable programs, then eventually I would be better placed to make it to the USA someday. What seemed like just yesterday when I told myself this has paid off beautifully.

Today, I am amongst a select number of graduate students from the Carnegie Mellon University, CMU-Africa, in Kigali Rwanda, where I am doing a Masters in Information Technology in the College of Engineering. I am participating in a fall exchange program at Carnegie Mellon University's Pittsburgh campus, in the USA. It's been an exciting, challenging, and impactful journey to get here.

My studies outside Cameroon began at Ashesi University, Ghana, sponsored by the MasterCard Foundation. After Ashesi, I got another MasterCard Foundation Scholarship offer for CMU-Africa.

I'm happy it started when an Open Dreams Team walked into my Lower Sixth class in GBHS Bamenda then, to introduce us to Open Dreams. I believe dreams come true and dreams are the things we tell ourselves each and every day.
