Aviva Day holds a special place in our hearts—a day when we come together as a family to support babies born with congenital malformations.
This year, we marked Aviva Day at the Buea Regional Hospital alongside the incredible Open Dreams Buea Hub members, rekindling the spirit of compassion and hope that defines this journey. The theme of the celebration was, "Access to Quality Care Everywhere".
For me, this Aviva season was particularly profound. Having just completed my clinical electives in pediatrics as a 6th-year medical student at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Buea, I witnessed firsthand the challenges and triumphs of caring for vulnerable newborns.
Over the past month, I worked with some of the most inspiring young lives.
One case stands out in my memory—a pair of identical twins battling Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS). TTTS is a rare condition where abnormal blood flow in the shared placenta creates life-threatening complications for both twins. Despite every effort, we tragically lost the donor twin. The grief was immense, but it also strengthened my resolve to advocate for these little warriors and the families who fight alongside them.
Aviva Day is more than an event; it is a beacon of hope. It represents a brighter future for children born with congenital malformations, reminding us that every life is worth fighting for.
Let us continue to raise awareness, offer support, and stand as a community for these children and their families.
Together, we can create a world where every child has the chance to thrive.
